We're exploring the potential for autonomous vehicle (AV) technology to improve safety and mobility on city streets and through construction zones with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) on their Navy Yard AV shuttle project.
This project is planned to work in conjunction with the reconstruction of Interstate 95 and PIDC’s Navy Yard Connected Communities and Master Plans, all of which seek to enhance multimodal mobility, equity, freedom of choice, and safety. The operational data collected will help to improve connections within the Navy Yard and beyond to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Broad Street Line and Stadium District as well as the Tastykake plant and the Hilco redevelopment site.
AECOM has worked closely with PennDOT to create the project Concept of Operations (ConOps); securing a Travel Options Program (TOP) grant which is paying for a one-year lease of the shuttle; and supporting the route creation and shuttle testing. This three-phased project initially explores how the shuttle can operate in the historic section of the Navy Yard (Phase 1); interact with live traffic while connecting to the South Philadelphia Sports Complex (Phase 2); and ultimately service western areas of the Navy Yard, including Tastykake headquarters and the new Hilco redevelopment site.
